CHEMISTRY: A FUNDAMENTAL OF THE NATURAL SCIENCES, BASIC TECHNOLOGY FOR NEXT-GENERATION INDUSTRY
Chemistry is the discipline to study properties, compositions and reactions of atoms, molecules, and materials, and how chemical processes work in nature. As a part of pure science, chemistry basically aims to explore the principles and laws of nature. On the other hand, chemistry is a highly practical discipline as it improves the quality of our daily life and contributes to human welfare by providing useful substances using chemical knowledge. For example, chemistry is being used as a basic knowledge to address big challenges in various areas including the battery industry, the semiconductor industry, diagnosis and other life sciences, and the pharmaceutical industry. Chemistry plays a pivotal role in academia and industry as a discipline that deepens the understanding of the material world and creates new substances, and its importance is increasing.
SYSTEMATIC CURRICULUM PROVIDED BY EXCELLENT FACULTY
There are currently 17 active faculty members who have expertise in physical chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and biochemistry. All the faculty members are committed to providing excellent instruction to students of diverse backgrounds and academic interests. Our curriculums bring chemistry into context by integrating current literature, inquiry, collaborative problem-solving, and modern experimental methods into lecture and laboratory-based coursework. Faculties (17), staff (4), and graduate students (100+) actively work together to develop new student-led laboratory classes in five research areas. We also offer practice-oriented classes that apply big data and AI techniques to chemistry problems. It will be able to foster convergence talents suitable for the AI era. Also, you can deepen your knowledge of advanced chemistry through the graduation thesis program that allows you to directly participate in laboratory research.
CONTRIBUTION TO INDUSTRY, RESEARCH INSTITUTE, AND ACADEMIA
Ultimately the systemic thinking and problem-solving skills developed within the chemistry major make students successful candidates for a wide range of careers in chemistry and beyond including engineering, teaching, consulting, medicine, law, science writing, and science policy. Graduates of the Department of Chemistry have gone on to pursue careers in companies and research institutes related to electronic materials, petrochemicals, energy, sensors, and cosmetics, demonstrating their capabilities as scientific experts in various fields. Graduates of this department have recently found employment at Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Samsung, LG Chem, Lotte Chemical, GS Caltex, SK Innovation, etc. Some graduates are appointed to staff in national research institutes and faculty members in universities to continue academic research and contribute to nurturing future talents.
UNREMITTING EFFORTS TO BECOME THE BEST CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT
To create the highest level of education and research environment, we have been continuously winning government projects by fully demonstrating the department's competitiveness. We have pursued an advanced undergraduate education program by running the department with the Creative Korea initiative (Training Center for Molecular Materials: 2014-2019) and the national university development initiative (Convergence Research in Molecular Science and Training Program: 2019-present). Recently, we have been appointed as the 4th-stage BK21 initiative (Education and Research Center for Molecular Materials: 2020-present) and are striving to educate professional scientists. All the faculty members constantly put efforts to create a top-ranked department in chemistry in Korea.
